What does AMG stand for anyway?

Based in Affalterbach, Germany, Mercedes-AMG produces some of the fastest and most expensive automobiles in the Mercedes Benz lineup.  Their quality and performance is legendary, and even to non-enthusiasts, the cars themselves are easily distinguished by the world famous AMG badge.

Although AMG had been developing high performance Mercedes vehicles for decades, it wasn’t until 1990 that AMG and Daimler-Benz agreed to a contract allowing Daimler-Benz to distribute AMG vehicles through their well established network of Mercedes Benz dealers.  Then in 1999, DaimlerChrysler purchased controlling interest in AMG officially bringing the specialty group into the Mercedes family as Mercedes-AMG.

Although AMG is synonymous with luxury performance cars, few people actually know what “AMG” stands for.

In 1967, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher – both former Mercedes engineers – started building racing engines under the name AMG, short for Aufrecht, Melcher, and Grossaspach; the German village where Aufrecht was born.  AMG: Aufrecht, Melcher, Grossaspach (pronounced like this).  Amazing how three little letters can mean so much.
